New Horizons for Seniors Program: Call for Proposals

The Government of Canada has launched the annual New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) Community-based stream 2024-2025 Call for Proposals (CFP). This program is offered through Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), and it aims to invest in impactful projects that benefit seniors across Canada.

The NHSP is designed to enhance the lives of seniors and their communities by funding projects that promote volunteerism, mentorship, social participation, and inclusion of seniors. The program also focuses on addressing issues such as elder abuse, social isolation, and financial security.

Application Period

The application window is open from August 1st until September 12th.

Funding and Project Criteria

Projects must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Be no longer than 52 weeks in duration
  • Request no more than $25,00
  • Meet at least one NHSP program objective
  • Have seniors leading or playing a key role in the project’s planning or delivery
  • Demonstrate cost-effectiveness

Program Objectives

Projects must meet at least one of the following objectives:

  • Promote volunteerism among seniors and other generations
  • Engage seniors in the community through mentoring
  • Expand awareness of elder abuse, including financial abuse
  • Support the social participation and inclusion of seniors
  • Provide capital assistance for community projects and programs for seniors

National Priorities for 2024-2025

The NHSP will prioritize projects that address one or more of the following national priorities:

Priority 1: Supporting Healthy Aging

  • Addressing social isolation, including improving seniors’ digital literacy
  • Addressing ageism
  • Supporting mental health and seniors living with dementia

Priority 2: Preventing Senior Abuse

  • Reducing crimes and harm against seniors, including elder abuse
  • Developing educational materials to prevent financial fraud and scams

Priority 3: Celebrating Diversity and Promoting Inclusion

  • Promoting intergenerational mentoring and engagement
  • Advancing Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and improving the quality of life for Indigenous seniors
  • Serving diverse communities, including low-income seniors, Indigenous Peoples, 2SLGBTQIA+ seniors, Black or racialized seniors, members of Official Language Minority Communities (OLMCs), seniors with disabilities, immigrants or newcomers, those living in rural or remote settings, informal caregivers, and veterans

Priority 4: Supporting Financial Security

  • Helping seniors navigate and access government services and benefits
  • Supporting the financial empowerment of seniors

Organizations interested in applying for funding under the NHSP Community-based stream can do so by visiting the NHSP Page. Additionally, regional information sessions will be offered online or via teleconference to provide an overview of the application process. To participate in one of these sessions, send an email to your nearest New Horizons for Seniors Program office.
