Seniors Care Grant

Doubling the Support

Yesterday we tabled a bill that would double the Seniors Care Grant to $1500 to help older Nova Scotians dealing with the affordability crisis. The bill is the Seniors Care Grant Improvement Act and it would aim to increase the annual grant for eligible households to $1,500 starting January 1, 2025, and it would raise the maximum eligible income to $50,000. After 2025, the grant amount and income threshold would be adjusted annually based on the Consumer Price Index, with the necessary funds provided by the Legislature.

The Seniors Care Grant, created to help seniors on fixed incomes stay in their homes longer, is not sufficient with the rising cost of living. I am calling for the program to be increased from $750 to $1500, and for its eligibility to be increased so more seniors would be able to benefit.

Seniors are facing difficult decisions between heating their homes and paying bills and doubling the Seniors Care Grant would be a way to support their comfort and health while acknowledging their contributions to the province. I will also re-introduce bills throughout the week to strengthen the province’s social safety net and reverse the harmful cuts to the Heating Assistance Rebate Program.
