April Updates: Advocating for our schools and legislative achievements

As April comes to an end, I’m eager to share some significant highlights and ongoing priorities that affect our community.

First and foremost, I want to address a pressing issue that’s top of mind for many families in our area: overcrowding in our schools. While modulars may offer some short-term relief, the long-term solution lies in the construction of additional schools to accommodate the high growth areas of HRM, including the long-awaited school promised for Fairview Clayton Park. I want to assure you that advocating for this essential infrastructure remains a top priority for me, and I will continue to push for it until we see it become a reality.

Shifting gears, I’m proud to report that the Nova Scotia Liberal caucus has concluded another legislative session on a strong note, having tabled 26 bills and contributed significantly to the provincial budget with its ideas.

Among the key legislative achievements are:

  • The reduction of the HST by 2 per cent, making it the lowest in Atlantic Canada.
  • Combatting the housing crisis through rent regulation and the establishment of an arms-length housing authority.
  • Expanding the Heating Assistance Rebate Program to provide more support to those in need.
  • Enhancing emergency preparedness measures, including the creation of a dedicated fund for emergency response.
  • Covering the cost of medical training for volunteer firefighters.
  • Expanding job-protected leave for Nova Scotians with serious illnesses.
  • Providing supplementary breast cancer screening for individuals with dense breasts.

While these accomplishments are commendable, it’s important to acknowledge that more work remains to be done. Many Nova Scotians continue to face significant challenges, and our caucus is committed to advocating for policies that address their needs effectively.

As we move forward, I’m excited to get back out on the doorsteps of our community to talk to you about the issues that matter most to you. Your input and engagement are invaluable in shaping our community’s future. If you have any concerns, ideas, or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to reach out—I’m here to listen and act on your behalf.

Thank you for your continued support, and let’s keep working together to make Fairview Clayton Park an even better place to live, work, and thrive.
