Better ice conditions on lakes and rivers compared to spring 2015 mean that Nova Scotians have many opportunities to experience sportfishing, one of the most popular outdoor activities.
More than 80,000 anglers enjoy sportfishing every year by taking part in free fishing weekends, fishing derbies and tournaments and the Learn to Fish program for youth.
Sportfishing season opened April 1 and Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Keith Colwell said indications are that interest is high from anglers.
“Our staff are hearing from fishing licence vendors that they are doing a brisk business compared to last spring,” said Mr. Colwell. “Sportfishing is a popular recreational activity that families can enjoy together. There are many opportunities for anglers of all ages and skill levels to take to our waterways and participate in this healthy outdoor activity throughout the year.”
Anglers can learn about rules for the season in the 2016 Angler’s Handbook and Summary of Regulations accompanying their fishing licence and available at http://novascotia.ca/fish/sportfishing/ .
They can also follow weekly stocking reports for lakes throughout the province at http://novascotia.ca/fish/sportfishing/hatchery-stocking/stocking-update/ .
All anglers age 16 or older must purchase a general fishing licence. They are valid until March 31, 2017 and licence stubs must be returned at the end of the season.
Licences can be purchased from many gas retailers, hardware, convenience and sporting good stores or at any Department of Natural Resources district office, which can be found at http://novascotia.ca/natr/ .
“We’re seeing really good sales of fishing licences this spring,” said Helga Fraser, service manager with Canadian Tire in New Glasgow. “In fact, we’ve been selling two or three booklets a day, which is about 30 licences.”
The licence fees, HST included, are $27.60 for the season for residents of Nova Scotia and $63.65 for non-residents. Non-residents also have the option to purchase a seven day licence for $34.80. Seniors’ fishing licences are available for a discounted price of $6.80. One-day licences are available to resident and non-resident anglers for $13.10.
